CHER – The Corpora and Historical English Research Group

The CHER research unit aims to create, archive and propose corpora from different historical periods (from 1500 to early-1900), analyzing them through mixed methodologies and disseminating the results at national and international inter-university level.

The main purpose of CHER is to contribute to:

a) research of textual genres and dissemination of knowledge related to culture, behavior, religion, politics, information, and education within a socio-historical, environmental and temporal dimension;

b) analysis of diversity, identity, class, colonization, exploration, discovery, migration, trade, travel, and the impact on local and global societies in various textual genres and types.

Particular attention will be given to the methodologies for analysis of original texts within their own context, description, and the diachronic evolution of language in its social, cultural, and geographical dimensions.

The goal of CHER is to aggregate linguists and pragmatists interested in exploring communicative practices between social groups in the past; to examine how current communication practices are shaped by previous choices; and to compare how past communication practices differ from current ones. CHER will organize study days, conferences, and publications in order to disseminate knowledge as part of national and international inter-university collaborations.
