The UPHER project fits into the vast and multidisciplinary panorama of post-Holocaust studies. The project aims at analyzing the different linguistic conceptualizations and literary representations of “the other” in a multilingual (Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, Ukrainian) and transnational (Poland, Ukraine, Israel) corpus of literary texts that is the result of intense language and cultural contact. The relevant time frame encompasses the 20th century with special attention paid to the decades between the Shoah and the present day.
The Florence Research Unit focuses on Modern Hebrew literature. In the complex system of coexisting and competing social identities that is reflected in this literary production the research aims at:
1) Analysing forms and typologies of representation of “the other”;
2) Analysing metaphors, similes, symbols and other expressive devices associated with the representation of the “other” such representations;
3) Identifying linguistic and rhetorical patterns of exclusion/inclusion;
4) Identifying motifs relating to the extermination of the Jews of Central-Eastern Europe;
5) Creating and implementing a database which allows for the contrastive analysis of the collected data.
